So another thing it looks like Boyle had a lot of fun with is creating his character names. There are so many good ones, and I know when reading these stories now that most of the names I encounter will be different, funny, weird, and belonging to memorable characters.

examples:

Irv Cherniske
Zoltan Mindszenty

Maurice Barebaum

I love the little culinary details Boyle throws into his stories. The dishes he describes have nothing to do with the plot, but it has made me realize that reading about what the characters are eating/drinking is not only enjoyable but it gives me a more complete picture of the scene. Eating is a big part of life, and what people cook for themselves or eat or drink says something about them to a certain extent, so I appreciate the addition of these little details.

As a recently finished reader of To the Lighthouse, I feel that it is necessary to say that although it may not ever be my favorite book, I did certainly enjoy parts of it. I found the language to be difficult at times. Frequently throughout the novel, I completely zoned and was forced to reread sections. However, the language also gave and inside look of the characters' feelings. The dialogue in the book was minimal, rather the characters are always thinking of what to say or how to act.
The book was short, the sentences were short, and Meursault was destined to be short lived as well. Nevertheless, I found the book enticing and again poking at existentialism in some of the ways that Nausea did. For example in the latter half of the novel, Meursault begins having various epiphanies while he is in jail. His days start to be, "both long and short at the same time: long enough to live through, maybe, but so drawn out that they ended up flowing into one another." Our character ...

Hello friends!

Well since I have already been home since Wednesday, I am finished with our first assignment.

J.D. Salinger has been my partner over the past few days; we've spent many an hour in my makeshift bed together, he helping maintain my sanity, me patiently absorbing his stories and enjoying every minute of it. My soul is still partially present in the house of the Glass family, so I hope we all find each other there sometime soon...
