Boyle Meals

Post  Miss Elizabeth on Wed Apr 08, 2009 10:15 am

I love the little culinary details Boyle throws into his stories. The dishes he describes have nothing to do with the plot, but it has made me realize that reading about what the characters are eating/drinking is not only enjoyable but it gives me a more complete picture of the scene. Eating is a big part of life, and what people cook for themselves or eat or drink says something about them to a certain extent, so I appreciate the addition of these little details.

"a pan of lobster tortellini in a thick, buttery saffron sauce...he then removed from the oven the little toast rounds with sun-dried tomatoes and baked Atascadero goat cheese."
Sorry Fugu, which obviously had to include tasty lines like this

"Night before last they'd had the Carfarcts over for dinner - a nice sole amandine and scalloped potatoes..."
"'Two G&T's,' Coles said, 'tall, with a wedge of lime.'"
Peace of Mind

"Meg was searing chunks of thresher shark in a pan with green chilies, sweet red pepper, onion, and cilantro."
"Sonny was slumped into the breakfast nook with a vodka tonic and the sports pages."
"Meg finished the watering, made the pasta salad - bow-tie twists, fresh salmon, black olives, and pine nuts - ..."
Sinking House

"'Pink Boys,' I said. 'Vodka, crushed ice, and pink lemonade, crushed in a blender.'"
The Hat...I'll take one of those
