Reading #2
So for our next reading assignment, emily has suggested some potential literature.
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Nausea by Jean Paul Sartre
check into these books and we'll take a club vote.

My Vote
While I'm sure both would be fine choices, I cast my vote for Nausea. Unlike Luke's frivolous little truffle of a novella (Oh God J.D., God!) this book I think will offer some real challenges and perhaps discoveries, and if neither than at the very least quite a bit of shit that we can sling at each other. I did enjoy F+Z quite a bit but (and I'll speak for myself of course) it offered hardly any great journey away from a well established framework, one erected like a first high school hard-on squarely on comfort-zone island. "Haden, will you repopulate this island with me? Oh, you will? Oh that's grand! Really, really it is!"
So we've gotten our nice "easy read" out of the way. Now warm-up time is over.

Vote #2
I'm also voting for Nausea. Franny and Zooey was an enjoyable read and now I'm ready to get down and dirty. Anyway, I guess I'll save my thoughts on F+Z for any actual discussion we may get into.

Re: Reading #2
My vote also rolls in for Nausea.
Votes should be in by this friday (12/27), otherwise the book with the most votes by the end of the day will win by default.
Note: there are seven group members.

Vote End
Well it appears that this vote turned into a nauseating blowout. Great participation.
Everyone should beg, borrow, or steal a copy of Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre sometime soon. We will have three weeks to read this book. (i.e. 12/27/08-----1/16/09) before moving on.

Re: Reading #2
I just finished The Bell Jar and on the back there's a review quote from the New York Times that says "...the kind of book Salinger's Franny might have written about herself ten years later, if she had spent those ten years in Hell." I had been thinking the same thing while reading it, so good thing we're going with Nausea!
